Keep the Routine. Adjust the Dose.

One of the biggest misconceptions about consistency is that every workout needs to look the same.

It doesn't.

Your capacity isn't always identical every day.

Some days you've slept well, you're well recovered and you're ready to be challenged.

Other days you've had four hours' sleep, work has been stressful, something feels a little sore, or you simply don't have much in the tank.

That doesn't always mean:

“Don't exercise.”

Sometimes it means:

Adjust the dose.

Think of your exercise programme as having a number of dials we can turn.

LOAD How much resistance you're using.

VOLUME How many sets and reps you complete.

INTENSITY How hard you're working.

DURATION How long you train for.

EXERCISE SELECTION Which movements make sense for you that day.

On a great day, we might turn some of those dials up.

On a lower-capacity day, we might turn some down.

Maybe your usual 60-minute session becomes 30.

Three sets become two.

Your planned heavy session becomes a moderate one.

A movement that's uncomfortable today gets changed.

Or perhaps the goal simply becomes to move rather than progress.

The routine remains. The dose changes.

This isn't taking the easy option.

It's understanding that consistency over months and years matters far more than forcing every individual session to match what was written on paper.

There will absolutely be times when rest is the right decision.

But there are also plenty of days where the choice doesn't need to be:

100% or nothing.

Sometimes 70% is appropriate.

Sometimes 40% is enough.

And sometimes you'll walk through the door feeling average and discover you're capable of more than you expected.

Good programming provides structure.

Good coaching knows when to adapt it.
